2014 Moir Stakes Tips: Dangers To Lankan Rupee

Leading form analyst Adam Blencowe has Lankan Rupee on top of his 2014 Moir Stakes tips, but he admits that there are dangers to the world’s highest rated sprinter in the Group 1 event at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Lankan Rupee suffered a shock first-up defeat to Angelic Light in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley on September 6, but punters are confident that he can bounce back to winning form and he is currently available at the short Moir Stakes odds of $1.55.

Blencowe told RSN that he expects Lankan Rupee to record his fourth Group 1 victory in the Moir Stakes, but he believes that the Redoute’s Choice gelding has to perform at his best to defeat the likes of Buffering and Rebel Dane.

“It was a surprise defeat for Lankan Rupee first-up, but he still ran really well and they ran good figures,” Blencowe said.

“He was the one out there carving them up and Angelic Light bloused him late.

“There was no fluke about that and she is a credible danger tonight but, I do think that he will turn the tables and the market agrees.

“I have him marked at about 1.60 and I think that is the right sort of price.

“Buffering is a genuine Group 1 sprinter as well and Rebel Dane looked 12 months ago that he would really take a stride, but he has sort of hit a brick wall around the 120 mark and he hasn’t been able to go past that.

“He is still a good talent on his day and he has a really nice turn-of-foot.

“There are genuine dangers to him here and he will have to be on his game, but I think that he is obviously a pretty top class sprinter and he is going to take a world of beating.”

Buffering is currently on the second line of 2014 Moir Stakes betting markets at a quote of $5.50 from Angelic Light ($7), Rebel Dane ($8) and extreme outsider Unpretentious ($31).

Favourites have won four out of the past five editions of the Moir Stakes and Regimental Gal in 2004 is the only odds-on favourite that has been beaten in the race in the past 30 years.
