2014 Mackinnon Stakes Tips: Foreteller The Value

Foreteller is on top of the 2014 Mackinnon Stakes tips of form expert Daniel O’Sullivan and he believes that the imported gelding is good value at his current price in betting for the Group 1 event at Flemington tomorrow.

Foreteller started the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 25 at a quote of $30 and looked like a winning chance at the 200 metre mark, but was badly held up at the top of the straight before running home strongly to finish fifth.

O’Sullivan told RSN that he believes the Mackinnon Stakes is a very tough race to access, but he feels that the $1 million event is the right sort of race for Foreteller and feels the Dansili gelding is good value at his current Mackinnon Stakes odds of $10.

“Foreteller was a good run in the Cox Plate and he lost momentum at a vital stage rounding the bend when he was squeezed up between Happy Trails and Side Glance and he had to change course and pick up again and he was only beaten .6 of a length,” O’Sullivan said.

“Barring his run in last year’s Melbourne Cup, his two most recent runs at Flemington was third in the Australian Cup to Fiorente and Green Moon and prior to that he won the Makybe Diva Group 1 mile at weight-for-age.

“At around $10 he tends to bob up in these races now and again and I expect him to run particularly well.”

He’s Your Man is currently locked in a battle for Mackinnon Stakes favouritism with Rising Romance and Criterion, but O’Sullivan revealed that he is happy to oppose the Epsom Handicap winner.

O’Sullivan said that horses coming out of the Cox Plate have an excellent record in the Mackinnon Stakes and he feels that He’s Your Man would have to improve significantly on his effort in the Epsom Handicap to record a maiden win under weight-for-age conditions.

“I don’t particularly like He’s Your Man,” O’Sullivan said.

“His figures don’t really stack up at weight-for-age and he would have to go up a level to a new career peak.

“He beat Royal Descent in the Epsom, which was a great win, but he did get five kilos off her at weight-for-age.

“If Royal Descent was in this race she would be about $5 or $6 against this field and she finished almost level with He’s Your Man giving him five kilos, so for He’s Your Man to be $5 in this race looks considerably weak.”

He’s Your Man and Criterion are both currently available at 2014 Mackinnon Stakes odds of $5.50 and are narrow favourites from Rising Romance ($6), Happy Trails ($7.50) and Foreteller.
