  • 2nd: Thunder Lady
  • 3rd: Golconda
  • 4th: Hipster Girl

Classy three-year-old Set Square has broken through for a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing in just her fourth competitive appearance at the races this afternoon; displaying a keen turn of foot to win the featured Group 1 Crown Oaks.

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Hugh Bowman settled the Reset mare in prime position on the heels of early leaders Fontein Ruby and Imperial Lass.

Receiving an ideal run in transit and continuing to stalk the Crown Oaks leaders rounding onto the straight, Set Square spooled up and charged to the fore of the pack, pulling more than a length clear of a spirited Thunder Lady when hitting the line; Golconda running on for third.

Bowman secured his second Crown Oaks victory in partnering Set Square to victory this afternoon, and was quick to praise the efforts trainer Ciaron Maher and the fortitude of his classy mount.

“She’s a good filly and she raced herself into contention here. Ciaron Maher is just an excellent conditioner of these middle-distance to staying-type horses and I haven’t ridden a lot for him but I couldn’t think of a better way to get the association off,” Bowman said immediately after crossing the line.

Talented mare Allelu has opened 2014 Crown Oaks Day in the best way possible for trainer Sylvia Thompson, displaying a keen turn of foot down the famous Flemington straight to take out the 7 News Plate.

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Michael Rodd settled the Testa Rossa mare in prime position on the heels of early leaders Zoe’s Gift and Bella Mollie who set only a fair tempo down the back straight and rounding the bend.

Finding the final straight wide and with plenty to do, Allelu steadily spooled up and charged home late; poking a head clear less-than 50m from the post to finish ahead of Miss Maggiebeel and Kansas Sunflower.

Rodd delivered a perfectly-timed ride on Allelu in the 7 News Plate and was thrilled to deliver Thompson an Oaks Day victory.

“When I started out riding on the Gold Coast … Sylvia used to wake me up early in the morning to ride track work when I was learning to ride and also race day and this is the first time I’ve ridden a winner for her out on her own, so it’s a great thrill,” Rodd said after crossing the line.

Race 2 – Swisse Wellness Trophy (1800m) Results

Leon and Troy Corstens have continued their competitive showing at Flemington Racecourse this week, saddling talented five-year-old You Rock to victory in this afternoon’s Swisse Wellness Trophy.

Jumping from the gates well, You Rock settled four back, off the fence and allowed early leaders Magnapal, Smashing Doubt and Time To Test to set a somewhat quick tempo down the straight and rounding the bend.

Hugging the rails leading into the final straight, jockey James McDonald led the son of Hussonet through an inside gap and to the lead; maintaining a strong enough sprint to survive a late charge from Saigon Tea, By The Grace running on for third.

McDonald showed his class in partnering You Rock to victory in the Swisse Wellness Trophy and immediately heaped the praise on Team Corstens’ for their preparation of the five-year-old.

“He’s going well, fully credit to Leon Corstens’ team and Troy – they said he would run really well and a lot of confidence in the camp,” McDonald said after the race.

Onemorezeta has continued her impressive run through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival on Crown Oaks Day this afternoon; displaying a keen turn of foot late to take out the Gucci Stakes.

Jumping from the gates only fairly, Onemorezeta gave early leaders Eloping, Tawteen and Chiavari a four length start, but steadily built in momentum and charged through the pack over the last 300m; poking half a length clear when finding the line ahead of the two far-favoured chances.

Champion jockey Damien Oliver timed Onemorezeta’s late charge perfectly, and was pleased to deliver trainer Kris Lees a Crown Oaks Day race win.

“She’s a brave little filly – that Eloping is very hard to get past but she managed to ware her down … great to ride a winner for Kris Lees, we go back a long way,” Oliver said after taking out the Gucci Stakes.

Race 4 – Apia Celebrating Greys Challenge (1400m) Results

Impressive grey Secret Toy Bizness has completed a perfectly-timed run to take out the Apia Celebrating Greys Challenge ahead of a fast-finishing Time To Plunder and Specter.

Jumping poorly, jockey Damian Lane was forced to settle the five-year-old mare off the pace of early pace-setters Smoken Cash, Beauty’s Beast and Emboldened who kept the field moving at a noticeably quick tempo.

Arriving on the final straight with plenty to do, Lane identified a gap between the fence and the main pack and steered Secret Toy Bizness through, who responded with an exceptional kick to find the line a comfortable length in the clear.

Having run third in the same event in 2013, co-trainer Chris Ledger was quick to praise the quick thinking of Lane during the Celebrating Greys Challenge.

“It was terrific – Damian from the wide gate just snagged her back to last and instructions were to come wide, but the fence opened up and just rode the horse lovely,” Ledger said after the race.

Exciting three-year-old prospect Petrology has secured without doubt his most impressive race win to date on 2014 Crown Oaks Day, producing a strong final straight sprint to take out the Listed TV Stakes.

Jumping from the gates particularly well, Petrology settled in prime position on the heels of early leaders Upham and San Carlos who maintained a steady pace over the back straight and rounding the bend; joined at the fore by Spur On Gold upon turning for home.

Kicking well, Petrology quickly charged to the head of the pack with 300m to run; pulling clear and sustaining a good enough sprint to finish half a length ahead of a fast-finishing Chill Party; Tashbeeh running on for third.

Jockey Dwayne Dunn revealed after the race that trainers David Hayes and Tom Dabernig and the horse’s connections have been considering gelding Petrology at the conclusion of his spring campaign, but may change their minds following his maiden Stakes victory this afternoon.

“This horse has shown plenty of ability to win a race like this … he probably will be better as a gelding and be a serious race horse like that, but that might change their minds now that he’s won a race,” Dunn said.

Race 6 – Group 3 G.H. Mumm Stakes (1100m) Results

Talented sprinter Vain Queen has returned to the winner’s circle with a commanding performance at Flemington on Crown Oaks Day; exploding from the main pack with 300m to run and finding the line in the Group 3 G.H. Mumm Stakes five lengths in the clear.

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Damien Oliver settled Vain Queen within the pack of 14, falling into a good rhythm as Minaj, Rebel Bride and Bounding took up the early pace.

Steadily moving through the pack, the Artie Schiller mare kicked up a gear and broke clear to finish well and truly out of reach of Bounding; Lilliburlero and Shamal Wind sharing third place.

Oliver secured a second 2014 Crown Oaks Day victory in taking out the G.H. Mumm Stakes and was impressive by the turn of foot displayed by Vain Queen.

“I just needed a bit of daylight and she just exploded. She’s got a great turn of foot on her this mare, if you can smother her up like we did today and then she sees daylight she really lets go for you,” Oliver said.

Four-year-old Atmospherical has completed a perfectly-timed ride to take out the Listed Dilmah Earl Grey Stakes on Crown Oaks Day this afternoon.

Jumping into a perfect rhythm, James McDonald found a clear racing line for the Northern Meteor filly, but allowed early leaders Fab Fevola and Canali a comfortable head start.

Steadily building in momentum, McDonald pressed Atmospherical forward and easily found the fore of the pack; extending to find the line close to two lengths in the clear of Consorting and a further length from third-placed Straight Gold.

McDonald delivered a typically polished ride on Atmospherical in the 2014 Dilmah Earl Grey Stakes, and was quick to commend the four-year-old on her impressive performance.

“She was brilliant – she relaxed well, good speed in the race, got a lovely run and she was too good for them. She’s really progressive, she’s only had the nine starts and her record speaks for itself,” McDonald said.

Race 9 – Crown Resorts Plate (1600m) Results

Dwayne Dunn has completed 2014 Crown Oaks Day in the best way possible, claiming a race double in winning the Crown Resorts Plate with Sadaqa this afternoon.

Jumping from the gates well, Dunn settled the five-year-old in prime position on the heels of early leaders Leveraction and Bel Seal, in-turn receiving an ideal run in transit.

Finding the final straight with a clear racing line, Sadaqa quickly locked in a fierce pace battle with Leveraction; pulling clear with 200m to race and sustaining a strong enough sprint to withstand a late charge from a fast-finishing Aurum Spirit.

Dunn was thrilled to close 2014 Crown Oaks day with a race win, revealing his wife had selected Sadaqa at the Adelaide yearling sales four years ago.

“It was fantastic – I’ve had a fair bit to do with this horse because my wife actually picked him at the Adelaide yearling sales, so it’s been a long journey for the horse and he’s done a good job,” Bowman said after crossing the line in Crown Oaks Day’s card-ending Race 9.
