2014 Cox Plate Best Bet – #8 Criterion
Criterion took a while to reach peak form during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, but he had the ideal lead-up run for a Cox Plate when he finished second behind Fawkner in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on October 11.
The Sebring entire has never previously raced at Moonee Valley, but he has the ability to track into a race on the turn, which is required to win the Cox Plate, and his ability to run out 2400 metres will be an advantage in what is set to be a strongly run race.
Fawkner is the obvious danger to Criterion, but at his current Cox Plate odds the four-year-old represents great value and is an excellent chance of recording a positive 2014 Cox Plate result for connections.
2014 Cox Plate Best Place Bet – #3 Side Glance
Side Glance is currently available at 2014 Cox Plate odds of $26 to win and $6.70 to place, but he is a much better chance to finish in the placings than his odds suggest.
The Passing Glance gelding may lack the talent to win the Cox Plate, but he is a very consistent galloper and he rarely runs a bad race.
The seven-year-old will have taken plenty of benefit from his tough third place finish in the Caulfield Stakes and it would not surprise if he was able to produce a similar performance in the Cox Plate.
2014 Cox Plate Day Best Bet – #4 Au Revoir In Moonee Valley Gold Cup
Au Revoir will make his Australian racing debut in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m) this afternoon and he is an excellent bet to press his claims for a Melbourne Cup berth win a win in the Group 2 event.
The Singspiel entire has not recorded a win since he took out the Prix Bourdin in France in August last year, but he has form around some of the best horses in Europe like Norse King, Spiritjim, Ruler Of The World and Flintshire.
Au Revoir will not face this sort of competition in the Moonee Valley Cup and the performances of Admire Rakti in the Group 3 Caulfield Cup (2400m) and Contributer in the Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m) showed once again that international stayers are superior to what we have in Australia.
