The 2013 Caulfield Cup is an incredibly open race and a good ride could be the difference between a horse winning the race or finishing out of the prizemoney.

Trainer Pat Carey, who has Ethiopia in the 2013 Caulfield Cup field, said yesterday that the Caulfield Cup is ‘a good jockeys race’ and with little splitting a number of the leading chances the best ride is likely to win today’s race.
Most of the jockeys riding in the Caulfield Cup have past experience in the race but a number of leading riders have a surprisingly poor record in the $2.5 million Group 1 event.

Manighar – Luke Nolen (7 0-0-1)
Luke Nolen has never had much success in the Caulfield Cup with his third place finish on Lights Of Heaven in the 2012 edition of the race his best ever result
Dandino – Craig Williams (9 2-0-1)
Craig Williams has been the form Caulfield Cup jockey in recent years winning the past two editions of the race with Southern Speed and Dunaden.
Ethiopia– Rhys McLeod (0 0-0-0)
Rhys McLeod will be making his debut in the Caulfield Cup but has previously ridden Ethiopia in the Cox Plate (2040m) and Melbourne Cup (3200m).
Waldpark– Brenton Avdulla (2 0-0-0)
Brenton Avdulla missed the placings on Secret Admirer (2012) and Domesky (2011) in his two previous rides in the Caulfield Cup.
Glencadam Gold– Tommy Berry (0 0-0-0)
Tommy Berry was replaced on Glencadam Gold by Jim Cassidy for last’s year race but will make his Caulfield Cup debut on the 2012 Metropolitan Handicap winner this afternoon.
Mr Moet– Hugh Bowman (2 0-1-0)
Hugh Bowman is chasing his first win in a major Melbourne race after finishing second on Roman Emperor in the 2009 edition of the race.
Fawkner– Nicholas Hall (4 0-1-0)
Nicholas Hall has ridden for the Macedon Lodge team in the Caulfield Cup on several occasions and finished second on Green Moon in 2011.
Jet Away– Damien Oliver (18 4-2-1)
Damien Oliver has won the Caulfield Cup on Mannerism (1992), Paris Lane (1994), Doriemus (1995) and Sky Heights (1999) and has the best Caulfield Cup form out of any of the riders in this year’s field.
Kelinni – Steven Arnold (4 0-0-0)
Steven Arnold has had four rides in the Caulfield Cup for no success and is an outside chance to finish in the placings with Kelinni.
Moriarty – Craig Newitt (4 0-0-1)
Craig Newitt’s best result in the Caulfield Cup was his third place finish on Tullamore in the 2011 edition of the race.
My Quest For Peace – Corey Brown (9 0-0-1)
Corey Brown has returned from Singapore to ride My Quest For Peace in the 2013 Caulfield Cup and will be hoping he can turn around his poor form in the race.
Hawkspur – Jim Cassidy (18 2-0-1)
Jim Cassidy’s strike rate in the Caulfield Cup isn’t great but he previously won the race on equine superstar Might And Power (1997) and George Hanlon-trained Diatribe (2000).
Julienas – Kerrin McEvoy (11 1-0-1)
Kerrin McEvoy won the 2008 Caulfield Cup on Godolpin stayer All The Good and is in-form having won both the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) in the past week.
Mr O’Ceirin – Dwayne Dunn (10 1-0-0)
Dwayne Dunn scored the biggest win of his career on Tawqeet in the 2005 Caulfield Cup but since that victory has performed poorly in the race.
Silent Achiever – Glen Boss (13 0-1-2)
Glen Boss has had plenty of success in the Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate and Golden Slipper but has never won the Caulfield Cup; finishing second on champion mare Makybe Diva in 2004.
Royal Descent – Nash Rawiller (6 1-0-1)
Nash Rawiller won from the front on Elvstroem in the 2013 Caulfield Cup and has an excellent chance to win the time-honored race again on Royal Descent.
Tuscan Fire – Michael Walker (1 0-0-1)
Michael Walker only picked up the ride on Tuscan Fire after Luke Currie was suspended for testing positive to a banned substance earlier this week.
Dear Demi – James McDonald (0 0-0-0)
James McDonald will have his first ride in the Caulfield Cup when he reunites with Dear Demi for the first time since she finished third in the 2012 Group 1 Flight Stakes.
